International Women's Day at Hothorpe Venues

8 March 2019

Here at Hothorpe Venues, we’re lucky to be surrounded by women working hard and achieving amazing things.

The nature of our business means we meet everyone from strong women planning their wedding to strong women leading global companies and everyone in between.

We’re catching up with some of our team to see what International Women’s Day means to them…

Emily, Operations Manager

Q: What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

A: It means celebration of empowerment for women and promoting a better balance of equality.

Q: Which woman/ women inspire you?

A: I would say two women inspire me, Kylie & my mother! Kylie has a sparkle that has never faded since the Charlene days in Neighbours, despite her battle with cancer and she has a constant desire to succeed!

My mother definitely inspires me, from protesting for women’s working rights in the 1960s, anti-nuclear protests at Greenham (I was there too – in a buggy with my baby brother), she’s never been shy at expressing her views and values!

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self as a young woman growing up?

A: Nothing, I don’t have any regrets. My life and mistakes have all shaped who I am now. Life is an adventure, there’s no need for forewarning or advice.

Q: How do you find it different working in a team filled with women?

A: I have certainly made real long term friends, who are always supportive!

Q: Lastly, which famous woman/ women would you like to go on a girl’s night out with?

A: Lady Gaga, Annie Mac, Honey Dijon, Grace Jones and Kylie, it’s be the perfect night in Ibiza at Pines.

Julia, Wedding Coordinator

A: To be confident and surround yourself with people who care about you! Also, take a compliment.

Q: How do you find it different working in a team filled with women?

A: Cameron Diaz or Jennifer Aniston.

 Leah, Sales Coordinator

Q: What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

A: I think it’s about championing female empowerment & celebrating the achievements of women all around the world and continuing to fight for equality!

Q: Which woman/ women inspire you?

A: Historically, the suffragettes – it’s amazing that they risked their lives to make sure we had the same rights to vote as men. In modern day Emma Watson inspires me, she launched the HeForShe campaign and shut down the suggestion that feminism is the same as man hating.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self as a young woman growing up?

A: Don’t let fear stop you from trying new things and never think ‘I can’t do that because I’m a girl’.  Also, don’t care what others think as long as you’re happy!

Q: How do you find it different working in a team filled with women?

A: We all support each other, which helps us to grow in our careers. I love having a female MD who is inspiring and encourages equality.

Q: Lastly, which famous woman/ women would you like to go on a girl’s night out with?

A: Either Alexa Chung to get some style tips, Emma Watson to talk about feminism (and Harry Potter, of course) or Michelle Obama, who has influenced so much positive change over the world!

Estelle, Reception Manager

Q: What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

A: Empowerment!

Q: Which woman/ women inspire you?

A: Kim Kardashian inspires me, she’s successful, determined and works hard. She also isn’t bothered about other peoples opinions and has confidence in herself.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self as a young woman growing up?

A: Don’t let anyone dull your sparkle!

Jane, Sales Manager

Q: What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

A: In essence, it means women supporting women to be the best that they can be.

Q: Which woman/ women inspire you?

A: JK Rowling, Kelly Holmes, Michelle Obama and Rosa Parks.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self as a young woman growing up?

A: It a cliché – but I would tell myself to travel more. Life isn’t about things, it’s about experiences. If I could have my younger days again I’d have at least three gap years, it’ll have to wait now until I retire…

…and always say no to Sambuca shots!

Q: How do you find it different working in a team filled with women?

A: I think women ‘get’ the need to balance work and family life.

Q: Lastly, which famous woman/ women would you like to go on a girl’s night out with?

A: I’d have to go with Sue Perkins, Katherine Ryan and Kat Slater.
